Facts verified2026-09-07

Midjourney is an independent, self-funded San Francisco research lab. Access is Discord or, since August 2024, the web app at midjourney.com. It ships only its own models (V6 through V8.2, plus Niji), not licensed third-party ones. The look is the product. V8.1 in April 2026 made HD 2K generation 3x faster and 3x cheaper (standard 50% faster, 25% cheaper). V8.2 became the default in July 2026. Commercial use is included even on the $10/mo Basic plan.

There is no free tier and no free trial. Costbench.com lists Basic at $10/mo ($8/mo yearly) for 3.3 fast GPU hours (about 200 images), with no Relax Mode. Extra fast hours are reported at about $4/hour (eesel.ai, 2026). An official failed-generation refund policy could not be verified on Midjourney's own docs. Third-party writeups say subscription refunds run only if lifetime GPU use is under 20 minutes. Tryorbye.com describes a Basic user who spent two hours without a usable result and was refused. Computertech.co's 2026 review cites a 1.5/5 Trustpilot score as of February 2026, with refund handling as a recurring theme.

up to 150 credits once (our algorithm may grant them), no card. That is Elyum Free. Paid plans are Plus $9/mo, Pro $29/mo, Ultra $69/mo; 1 credit equals $0.01, and you can top up. Every render comes back as a free preview (a take). KEEP the ones you want (that is when credits are charged) or KILL the rest for a full automatic refund. A failed generation is never charged. Free gets one kill a month; paid plans kill freely. Kept takes download clean, no watermark, commercial use included. Plan math lives on the pricing page. Image and video share one balance on the models catalog.

Elyum does not run V6 through V8.2 or Niji. Stay on Midjourney if that look, Relax Mode volume, or the Discord community is the job. We also do not ship a timeline editor, stock footage, talking-head avatars, a mobile app, team seats, or a community feed.

Why people switch from Midjourney

  • No $10 gate to generate

Elyum Free is up to 150 credits once (our algorithm may grant them), no card. Midjourney has no free tier and no free trial. Costbench.com puts the cheapest try at Basic, $10/mo for 3.3 fast GPU hours (about 200 images).

  • KEEP/KILL versus a 20-minute wall

Credits move when you KEEP a take. KILL refunds them in full. A failed generation is never charged. Midjourney's official failed-render refund text is not published. Third-party sites say subscription refunds stop once lifetime GPU use crosses about 20 minutes.

  • Models Midjourney will not license

Midjourney ships only its own line. Elyum puts Seedance, Wan, Gemini Omni Flash, Nano Banana, Kling, Veo, Flux and others on one balance. Start at the Seedance 2.5 page if the job is video, not a still.

  • An official API Midjourney still lacks

As of August 2026 Midjourney has no official public API. Its Terms of Service prohibit automated access; unofficial wrappers risk bans. Elyum has the MCP docs for Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor.

  • Fair-use unlimited on Pro and Ultra

Pro is $29/mo and Ultra is $69/mo, and both include fair-use unlimited image generation on selected image models. Midjourney's unlimited is Relax Mode on Standard $30/mo and up: slower queue (roughly 0-10 min), no fast-GPU cost. There is no unlimited fast-mode tier.

  • $9 Plus versus $10 Basic

Plus is $9/mo. Midjourney Basic is $10/mo with 3.3 fast hours, no Relax Mode, no Stealth Mode. Elyum listed rates already sit about 20% under Higgsfield, OpenArt and Runway anchors.

Where Midjourney still wins

  • V6 through V8.2 and Niji

The distinctive in-house line is Midjourney's whole product. Elyum does not host those weights. If you prompt for that look on purpose, switching loses the thing you paid for.

  • Community and prompt culture since 2022

Discord plus years of shared prompts is a real workflow. Elyum has no community feed. If you find jobs by browsing other people's gens, you will feel the hole.

  • Unlimited Relax Mode from $30/mo

Standard, Pro and Mega include unlimited Relax Mode after fast hours run out. That is a volume valve Elyum does not copy, except fair-use unlimited on selected image models on Pro and Ultra.

  • Stealth Mode on Pro and Mega

Midjourney Pro $60/mo and Mega $120/mo add Stealth Mode (private generations). Elyum has no team seats and no mobile app. If private Discord work is the habit, Midjourney still fits.

What it actually costs

Midjourney is subscription-only. Basic is $10/mo ($8/mo yearly): 3.3 fast GPU hours a month (about 200 images), commercial use included, no Relax Mode, no Stealth Mode. Standard is $30/mo ($24/mo yearly): 15 fast hours plus unlimited Relax Mode (slower, roughly 0-10 min queue). Pro is $60/mo ($48/mo yearly): 30 fast hours, unlimited Relax, Stealth Mode. Mega is $120/mo ($96/mo yearly): 60 fast hours, unlimited Relax, Stealth Mode. Extra fast hours are reported at about $4/hour after the allotment.

$9, $29, and $69. That is Plus, Pro, and Ultra on one credit balance. Free is up to 150 credits once (our algorithm may grant them), no card. 1 credit equals $0.01; top-ups are allowed. Pro and Ultra include fair-use unlimited image generation on selected image models. Listed model rates already sit about 20% under comparable Higgsfield, OpenArt and Runway anchors.

Worked example: a kept 2K still on the Nano Banana 2 page is 4.5 credits ($0.04). A kept 5-second 720p Seedance 2.5 clip is 95 credits ($0.95). Kill either take and that line is refunded. Midjourney Basic is $10/mo for 3.3 fast hours up front. Extra fast time is reported at about $4/hour.

Moving from Midjourney

  1. Download the images and clips you want to keep from Discord or the midjourney.com web app. Unofficial bulk-export wrappers violate Midjourney's Terms of Service and risk a ban.
  2. Create an Elyum Free account (up to 150 credits once (our algorithm may grant them), no card) and open the web studio.
  3. There is no Midjourney V8.2 here. For stills, start from the Nano Banana Pro page. For video, use Seedance or Wan, not Midjourney's 5s-to-21s pipeline.
  4. Run a prompt, inspect the free preview, KEEP the take you would ship or KILL it. Free allows one kill a month; paid plans kill freely.
  5. If you left because Midjourney has no official API, use the REST API docs or Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor via MCP.

Frequently asked questions

Is Elyum cheaper than Midjourney?
Door price: Elyum Plus is $9/mo, Midjourney Basic is $10/mo, and Elyum Free is up to 150 credits once (our algorithm may grant them). Midjourney has no free tier. Volume is different. Midjourney Standard at $30/mo adds unlimited Relax Mode. Elyum Pro at $29/mo adds fair-use unlimited on selected image models plus KEEP/KILL. A kept 2K Nano Banana 2 still is 4.5 credits ($0.04). Extra Midjourney fast hours are reported at about $4/hour. Cheaper means how many takes you KEEP versus how many GPU hours you already bought.
Does Elyum have the same models as Midjourney?
No. Midjourney is V6, V6.1, V7, V8, V8.1, V8.2, Niji, and its own image-to-video. It does not offer Seedance, Wan, Gemini Omni Flash, Nano Banana, Kling, Veo, Flux, Seedream, MiniMax or GPT Image. Elyum does not host Midjourney's weights. Other pairings are on the compare page.
What happens to a bad render on Elyum vs Midjourney?
On Elyum a failed generation is never charged. A preview you dislike can be KILLed for a full refund (one kill a month on Free; paid plans kill freely). Midjourney's official failed-generation credit policy is not published. Tryorbye.com and others report subscription refunds only when lifetime GPU use is under 20 minutes, including failed attempts.
Can I use Midjourney and Elyum together?
Yes. Keep Midjourney for V8.2 stills if that aesthetic is the brief. Use Elyum for licensed video models, a free preview loop, or MCP/API jobs Midjourney's Terms of Service do not allow. Download what you already own, then run new work here.
Does Midjourney have a free trial?
Midjourney has no free tier and no free trial. The cheapest official try is Basic at $10/mo ($8/mo yearly). Elyum Free is up to 150 credits once (our algorithm may grant them), no card. Free kills are capped at one a month.
Is there an official Midjourney API?
No official Midjourney API existed as of August 2026. Access is the Discord bot or the web app. The Terms of Service prohibit automated tools; unofficial wrappers risk suspension. Elyum publishes MCP and a REST API.
Does Elyum watermark paid downloads?
Kept Elyum takes download without a watermark. Commercial use is included. Midjourney's paid watermark policy is not published. Midjourney does grant commercial use on every paid plan, including Basic.
